Juno and Penelope reviews

First things first, the score on both of these was very good, there were no original song, but a rendition of a rather good Moldy Peaches song. Juno teetered very close to twee and even went right into some Belle and Sebastian, however this fit very well with the characters.

Juno starred a cast of actors who were supposed to be teenagers but were probably older than I am. It’s a story about teenage pregnancy but didn’t really take that part of it too seriously. The dialogue fit very well with this and it was odd to hear kids talking like that. I understood it but I can imagine in 10 years not having a clue. All in all pretty good to watch and a great soundtrack.

Penelope was a swine’s love story with fake American accents and a token midget. With a midget and a pig faced girl this clearly could have gone down the bestiality/midget porn route but instead went for the sickeningly sweet fairytale post-modern path. If her pig face wasn’t so cute I could have bought the numerous toffs balking and running from her ‘hideous’ appearance. But the one that stayed was the one she spent the time to bother chatting up a bit. I’ve already mentioned the annoying accents and apart from that the acting was ok. Worth spending a bit of time in dark room watching however you can also see it in a small room and you won’t be any worse off.
