Jodhaa Akbar review

I was expecting dodgy 80s fashion and I got a great medieval epic.

So I finally gave in and went to see a Bollywood film with the wife. This was definitely not what I was expecting, it was a epic movie on the proportions of something like Troy. It’s a story about the romance between the Muslin Mughul Emperor Akbar and his Hindu wife Jodhaa (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, you might know her as the Indian warrior from The Last Legion.). It’s based somewhat on history, although it’s not an area of history I knew much about.

The story had elements of sword fighting, religious and class equality, romance and a massive dollop of misunderstanding. Over the 3hrs plus there is some good character development and it was really well shot. The colours remind me of a ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ style, but with War Elephants and Camels.

Modern leaders should take a leaf out of Akbar’s book as his ideals were something we should aspire to. He didn’t want bloodshed, he just wanted to unite Hinustan.

Well worth checking out, plenty of talking points, action and a great story to keep you glue to the screen. The length wasn’t an issue other than tiredness! So take a comfortable pillow and enjoy the movie.
