My wife has regular cravings for foods that aren’t readily available in Edinburgh, so it was good to find the food she was craving. I’m talking about Cheong Fun – a sloppy Dim Sum. Quite tasty it was too… but only served until 3pm.
Yum Yum HK Diner is located on West Richmond Street in Edinburgh, very near the Southsider pub. It’s a small (20 would max!) family-run place and just like my mum’s cooking, the portions are generous. A large TV above the kitchen has Chinese TV (TVB I think) and there is a regular flow of Chinese customers. This is usually a good sign as it means there’s something about the place we don’t know. But that could also be a cliché and might not mean a thing.
There are very few of the favourites seen on most Chinese menus in the UK, which is a good thing because I’m sick of the same old choices. It does have a selection of bubble teas, which are an interesting taste and quite easy to choke to death on.
No choking was done on the food however, we side-stepped the Coca-cola spare ribs and Congee in favour of Steamed Rice with Roast Duck, Char-Sui and Crispy Roast Belly Pork – which I’m reliably informed is a typical dish – and Stir Fired Ho-Fun Malaysian Style. Both were very tasty, Ho-Fun is a thick noodle which I could easily get addicted to.
I would give it the full 5 out of 5 but the deep fried food was a bit greasy for me. Definitely looking to make regular visits as there’s plenty to try. Chicken with Super Soy Sauce, yes please!
