20" iMac with no options
I’ve got the chance to buy an iMac through my job for a very reasonable price. However there are no options you can’t upgrade the keyboard and mouse to wireless, get a bigger hard drive or Applecare. I’d be upgrading from a 15” Powerbook, 1.67 Ghz PowerPC, so what am I looking at getting?
The Specs
20” iMac, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB memory, built in iSight camera, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory, the latest version of OSX and the usual Superdrive (DVD & CD Writer)
The choices
I’d like to get the 24” iMac with the bigger processor, more memory, bigger hard drive and better graphics card. Mainly so I can play Starcraft II when it comes out but also so things run a lot quicker. I’d also like to watch movies on it and possibly even TV, games are ruled out due to latency issues. But it’ll cost around double the prices without even including the extras.
The decision
I’ll probably go for it, it’s a cheap option and 20” is big enough. I’m not really a power user either apart from the odd photoshop foray. I’ve heard rosetta is pretty slow (running PowerPC apps through Intel) which is a worry. Upgradability might be a issue also.
